“Because she was so special.” –Little Miss
Happy Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary!
Here’s a little recap of what we did to celebrate today:
First off, we did not make it to Mass this morning as planned. The Bird woke several times last night which caused me to sleep past my alarm. Had to offer that up!
We did sit down in the late afternoon for a little celebration.
I read an abbreviated Mid-afternoon prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours for the Assumption. And we would have prayed a Hail Mary together had some little folks not have been bickering over the pots of paint. Note to self: next time keep craft supplies out of sight until it’s time.
The antiphon and Psalm and reading were just perfect!
We know that when the earthly tent in which we dwell is destroyed we have a dwelling provided for us by God, a dwelling in the heavens, not made by hands but to last forever.–2 Corinthians 5:1
I asked if they knew what the Assumption was, and they did. Little Miss especially passed the quiz…”Jesus to Mary, her body and soul, up to heaven.” Why? “Because she was so special.” [heart-melt]
We feasted.
We feasted on leftover birthday coconut cupcakes from the weekend. I whipped up a quick blueberry sauce to slather on top. It was about 1/4 cup of frozen blueberries and 1 T of sugar on the stove over medium heat until a sauce formed.
Then we crafted!

The craft was super easy and based loosely on the link I shared in the plan. Since I got to this one late I had to improvise. I opened up google docs and on a blank page inserted a cloud shape. Sized it up, made the fill transparent. Copied and pasted another on the same page and pressed print.
For the image I found one I liked of the Assumption and printed it off small enough to fit in the cloud shapes.
Then we painted with watercolor (or colored with pencil, ahem, because we couldn’t keep our hands of the paint pots during prayer time, ahem) and embellished with gold glitter glue. Once the Mary image was set in place, we cut out the cloud shape.
And there we have it! I’d wanted to sing some hymns, but some among us were a little too cranky. So we’ll sing one together tonight at night prayer!
How did your celebration go? I’d love to know. Share in the comments here or with #hdahassumption
I’ll leave you with this prayer from Heavenwards by Fr. Joseph Kentenich
O Mother, in your holy heart
Deeply inscribe each name,
And as a sign that we are yours
Write it with blood and flame.
In love and childlike gratitude
Your name shall also be
Deeply inscribed within my heart
For time and for eternity.
