Veni, Creator Spiritus
Mentes tuorum visita,
Imple superna gratia,
Quae tu creasti pectora
Our family celebration for this Solemnity begin with the hymn and prayer before heading into the activity and treat.
Hymn: Come Down O Love Divine
This hymn is one of my favorites for Pentecost.
Prayer:
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love.
L: Send forth your spirit and they will be created.
R/. And you shall renew the face of the earth.
Let us pray.
O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit,
Did instruct the hearts of the faithful,
Grant us in the same spirit to be truly wise
And ever to rejoice in His consolation.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Story:
If you’re celebrating before heading to Mass (or if you’re unable to attend Mass due to the pandemic) take time to read the readings as a family. You can read from a children’s Bible with littles, or take time to explain the readings and have the bigger kids retell the story after you’ve read it. If you’re celebrating after attending Mass, take a moment and help the family recall and retell the happenings of the readings at Mass, significant points from the homily, or personal reflections on the readings.
Activity:
Pentecost is a wonderful day to introduce or get a refresher on the fruits of the spirit. I cam across some fruits of the spirit cards on Katie Warner’s website, and I love her idea there. I’m planning to print out her cards and place them in a jar or bowl. Then have each of us draw one card. The fruit of the spirit we draw will be a little challenge for us for the week. We’ll pray on it and focus on it, and, hopefully, with the help of the Holy Spirit, grow in it.

Dessert:
In searching recipes for Pentecost I came across this tasty looking Provencal cake made for the day. The Le Colombier’s almond topping is meant to resemble the feathers of a dove. I’m excited to give this recipe a try!

Alternatively, I think any type of cake is fitting for the day as it is the Church’s birthday! Make sure to light a candle and sing Happy Birthday before digging in! If you’re feeling thematic, place some strawberries upside down on top of your cake to resemble the tongues of flame descended on the apostles.
